Green School Memories

CAST invites former students and staff of Helston County Secondary School (known as the ‘Green School’) to a free presentation and gathering at 3 Penrose Road, Helston on Thursday 8th December at 7pm.

On Thursday 8th December the Helston-based charity CAST is hosting a special gathering for former teachers and pupils of the school that once occupied the 3 Penrose Road building now managed by CAST as a studio complex and centre for arts events. The free event forms part of a project to record and celebrate the history of the building.

With support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, CAST has been working with the oral history company Azook to make copies of school photographs, school reports and other documents brought in by former pupils, and to record interviews and create a collection of stories that can be shared through the online archive

The project has focused in particular on the years 1960 to 1972, when the school served children from the Lizard peninsula. During this period the school acquired its ‘Green School’ nickname to distinguish it from other Helston secondary schools and because of the colour of the uniforms worn by its pupils. The school closed in 1972, when comprehensive education came to Helston.

Radio journalist David George has conducted interviews with former teachers and pupils and on Thursday 8th December he will present a compilation including audio interviews, school photographs and other images. Doors open at 7pm and David George will introduce the presentation at 7.30pm, running for an hour. Refreshments will be available and there will be time to chat after the presentation.

Former teachers and pupils are warmly invited to come along, share memories and meet old friends. Family members are very welcome. Booking is advisable as the capacity of the hall is limited. To book a free place contact Elsa Collinson, administrator at CAST, by phone: 01326 565632 or by email:
